First Prize winner at both the 2025 Wigmore Hall International String Quartet Competition and the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition, Opus13 is rapidly building a reputation on the international chamber music scene. In 2026, the quartet was named a BBC New Generation Artist and received both the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award and the Sixten Gemzéus Music Award.

Opus13 comprises Norwegian violinists Sonoko Miriam Welde and Edvard Erdal, violist Albin Uusijärvi and cellist Daniel Thorell, both from Sweden. Named after Felix Mendelssohn’s youthful and passionate A Minor Quartet, Op 13, the first piece they ever played together, the quartet was formed in Oslo in 2014.

Alongside core quartet repertoire, Opus13 is a passionate ambassador of Nordic classical and contemporary music, regularly performing works by Grieg, Stenhammar, Tarrodi, Byström and Fagerlund.

About the series

Thanks to our continuing partnership with Wigmore Hall, we bring a prize-winning string quartet to Leeds for nine performances over three years.

Following a hugely successful first season in 2026, Opus13 captivated audiences with its exceptional musicianship, compelling performances and engaging stage presence. Hailed as a complete delight, Opus13 has quickly become a firm favourite with Leeds audiences.

We look forward to sharing the next chapter of the residency with you.

See you at a concert soon,
Leeds International Concert Season

A note from Opus13

First of all, thank you for a fantastic first season! We feel so proud and grateful to be Quartet in Residence, and we can’t wait to come back in 2027! For our second season, we’re bringing three exciting programmes featuring more of our favourite music. The first programme consists of Joseph Haydn’s joyful Op 77, No 1, Thomas Adès’ sublime and sensitive Arcadiana, and one of the greatest romantic quartets from Sweden: Wilhelm Stenhammar’s fourth string quartet in A minor.

The second concert is inspired by folk music, and brings together Five Pieces for String Quartet by Erwin Schulhoff, Béla Bartók’s third string quartet, and the first of Ludwig van Beethoven's Razumovsky quartets.

2027 also marks the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's death, so our third and final concert of the season is dedicated to his music. We will perform his Op 18, No 3, and Op 130 with the Grosse Fuge, and in the middle, a piece by Norwegian composer Martin Ødegaard: Roots. Ødegaard’s piece takes its inspiration from Beethoven’s Op 130, and was commissioned by us in 2024.

We’re very much looking forward to seeing you again soon in Leeds!
