Lunchtime Organ Music concerts
Leeds Lunchtime Organ Music series, Mondays at 1.15pm from September to April, is hosted by Leeds Cathedral during Leeds Town Hall’s refurbishment. All recitals are recorded live in concert. Once posted online, recordings remain available to watch on our website and YouTube channel for 30 days unless otherwise requested. Find out how you can support our free lunchtime concerts.

William Campbell, Peterborough Cathedral
William Campbell is familiar to Leeds audiences, having held posts at the cathedrals of Leeds and Bradford. His programme shows a wide range of musical colour and expression, from Louis Vierne’s darkly dramatic fourth symphony to Iain Farrington’s exuberant and jazz-influenced works, which have become highly popular recital pieces in recent years.

Jeffrey Makinson, Lincoln Cathedral
Francis Jackson’s Impromptu was dedicated to Sir Edward Bairstow, his predecessor as organist at York Minster. Jeffrey Makinson also performs Bairstow’s rarely heard Scherzo in A flat. Joseph Jongen’s Sonata Eroïca – a great favourite of former City Organist Simon Lindley – concludes the programme. Jeffrey Makinson is organist at Lincoln Cathedral.

Joshua Stephens, Winchester Cathedral
English music is strongly featured in this programme, reflecting the tonal colours of the Leeds Cathedral organ. William Lloyd Webber’s tuneful and romantic music was rather unfashionable in his lifetime but has recently become more popular. The last two pieces in the programme reflect two contrasting sides of Edward Elgar’s artistic personality. Joshua Stephens is organist at Winchester Cathedral.

Darius Battiwalla, Leeds City Organist
The programme opens in confident Edwardian style with a grand march by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. In the final two pieces we hear Nigerian composer Fela Sowande setting Yoruba and West Indian traditional melodies. Darius Battiwalla is Leeds City Organist.

Hilary Punnett
Hilary Punnett’s programme features Robert Schumann’s pedal studies, which were written not for organ but for piano with pedalboard attached. We also hear one of Healey Willan’s rarely heard ‘other’ organ pieces, finishing with Théodore Dubois’ exuberant Toccata.

D’Arcy Trinkwon has given recitals and premieres all over the world and has a huge range of repertoire – as did this livestreamed recital; including works by Charles Marie Widor, Johann Christian Heinrich Rinck, Georges Jacob, Dezso d’Antallfy and Paul Dukas’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.
