Behind the music with Will Burton
After years of admiring the Grimethorpe Colliery Band, Will Burton now takes to the stage as the band’s new Solo Eb Tuba player. Though only four months into his full-time position, Will’s journey with Grimethorpe already spans years of guest appearances, inspiration, and musical passion.
Will first picked up a brass instrument at the age of nine, beginning on tenor horn before discovering his love for the tuba at twelve. Early experiences watching Grimethorpe perform, including a memorable childhood concert at Sheffield City Hall, left a lasting impression. “I was fascinated by the shiny instruments and huge sound,” he recalls. “Because of those memories, it always feels special to walk out on stage with the band.”
He also credits the Tapton School Brass Band, where he later studied, as a significant influence during his formative years.
Will’s standout moment so far came during the band’s Christmas concert at Snape Maltings, Suffolk. “The hall was completely full, which is especially meaningful in a venue that has hosted some of the finest musical ensembles in the country,” he says. “Performing a solo there made the experience even more memorable.”
One of Will’s biggest influences has been Pat Phillips, who taught him throughout his school years and directed the band that took him on tours around Europe. “I’m now playing the tuba professionally, as well as holding my position in the band, and it wouldn’t have been possible without Pat’s mentorship and friendship.”
Musicality also runs in his family. While his parents aren’t brass musicians, they are highly musical – his mum teaches music and leads school shows, and his dad is a keen guitarist. Growing up surrounded by music of all kinds, and attending countless live concerts as a family, further strengthened his passion.
Will admits practice can sometimes be frustrating, but overall, he enjoys it. “It’s great working on new music and putting in the hard work to make sure our performances are as good as they possibly can be,” he says. That commitment pays off when he feels the audience’s appreciation: standing ovations, conversations after concerts, and knowing he’s helped create something special.
The only downside? “The nerves ahead of a big performance, but that’s just because we care so much about the band and wanting to give the best show possible.”
Will’s favourite piece to perform is the Corsaire Overture by Hector Berlioz. Adapted from the orchestral version, it’s become a staple of brass band repertoire. “It has a lovely slow theme before launching into a fast chase to the finish. It’s exciting to play and to listen to.”
Audiences can look forward to a wide-ranging programme that blends classic works with new repertoire, showcasing both the full band and its soloists. Will says: “Above all, audiences will experience high-quality music delivered with plenty of fun along the way!”
Will Burton performs with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band on Saturday 14 February, 7.30pm at Pudsey Civic Hall.
