Behind the music with Daniel Hohm

Since joining the Hammonds Band in January 2024, Daniel Hohm has brought an abundance of musicality to his role as Principal Euphonium. Originally from Germany, Daniel’s journey into brass banding began with a single moment of inspiration and has since grown into a professional career.

His favourite thing about playing in a brass band is the intimacy and collaboration it offers. “The relatively small size of the ensemble allows for chamber music-like precision and musical shaping,” he explains. “I love the extent of musical decisions being made not only by the conductor but by every single member of the band.”

That sense of shared responsibility is at the heart of Hammonds Band’s sound and is something Daniel values deeply.

His standout moment so far came on one of the biggest days of the year. “My musical highlight is appearing live on BBC1 on Christmas Day, performing with our friends at Halifax Minster.”

Daniel’s introduction to brass banding began at an instrument fair in his local wind band in Germany, where he chose the euphonium simply because he loved its sound.

Although Daniel is the first professional musician in his family, music also played a big part in his home life: “Growing up, my older sister would often practise piano and cello, which got me into music,” he explains. “My mum used to play mandolin and sing in choirs.”

Daniel credits several mentors for shaping his musical identity. “I’d say my biggest influence is my teacher, Steven Mead,” he says, referencing one of the world’s leading euphonium soloists. He also highlights the conductors he’s worked with over the years, particularly Hammonds Band’s own Musical Director, Morgan Griffiths.

Practice is both a joy and a challenge for Daniel, “It’s hard work, but anticipating the upcoming performance makes it enjoyable.” When it comes to live performances, Daniel loves the thrill and the pressure. “Both the best and the worst thing is that you only get one chance. It makes some real magic happen, but sometimes you wish you could have a second go at a certain passage!”

As for favourite pieces? “There are so many, but in this concert programme it’s Kenilworth by Sir Arthur Bliss. Something about those old pieces always gets me!”

Daniel promises audiences an exciting blend of repertoire and talent: “We’ll perform an eclectic programme of great music, including fantastic soloists, and there’s always something new for everyone to enjoy!”

Daniel Hohm perfoms with the Hammonds Band at Pudsey Civic Hall on Saturday 28 March.
