A concert featuring three outstanding performers from the RCO schools’ education programme.

George Ke is a student in Lower Sixth at Liverpool’s prestigious Blue Coat School, and is one of the first recipients of the Blue Coat School Organ Scholarship, set up in 2019 after the restoration of the school’s historic Father Willis Organ. George is currently working toward his ARSM piano diploma, having achieved distinctions at every grade. He plays a leading role in the school’s music department, accompanying the choir on organ and piano and performing with the school’s jazz, concert and show bands. He has an interest in conducting and has been appointed student musical director for the school’s 2024 production. He also plays Electric Guitar to Grade 8 standard. George is studying A Levels in Music, History, Economics and Maths and will be going on to study Music at University.

Nathan Monk began learning piano at a young age, with Margaret Rutherford, prior to singing with the Mellor Church Choir. It was through this that he became fascinated by the
organ, with inspiration from the organists and choir masters at St Thomas’ Church, Mellor. His formal organ studies began in 2019, with Simon Mercer. This was in preparation for joining the Junior RNCM in September 2019. Here, Nathan also studies piano with Manola Hatfield. Funded by the John Pilling Trust, Nathan was appointed the position of Organ Scholar at St Thomas’ Church, Mellor in 2020. In November 2021, he was promoted to the position of ‘Senior’ Organ Scholar. In 2021, he joined the big band with his two other instruments: bass guitar and double bass, which he studies with Geth Griffith.

Frankie Tempest has been a member of Leeds Cathedral Choir since 2014, and began learning the organ with David Pipe in 2018. Now in Year 11, he was appointed as the Cathedral’s Junior Organ Scholar this term, and helps with accompaniment of both the Senior and Junior Girls Choirs. Frankie is also an accomplished pianist and classical accordionist, studying accordion with Valerie Barr. For the past two years he has attended the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s accordion summer school run by Djordje Gajic.

This concert will last approximately 50 minutes.

This concert is given in memory of Catherine Ennis and with thanks to John Higham.

Organ Renewal Project at Leeds Town Hall

Work on the renewal of the Town Hall organ is well under way. Apart from the massive front pipes, which are stored on the floor of the stalls awaiting redecoration, the organ has been completely removed to Nicholson & Co’s workshop in Malvern.

Renovation of the existing pipes is progressing well, and many new parts and components have been delivered and manufactured. We need your support for this exciting project so please visit Leeds Town Hall for more information, and you can see pictures of the work in progress at Nicholson Organs.

Thank you.
