The Opera North String Quartet gave its debut recital at the Howard Assembly Room, Leeds in May 2011. With opera and orchestral life at the core of the group, the ONSQ have wowed audiences around the UK with their eclectic programming and creative interpretations. They are a unique collective of musicians with a wealth of experience performing with orchestras and chamber groups around the world.

As we search for a new leader for the quartet, and indeed the Orchestra of Opera North, we are in the wonderful position of enjoying different violinists coming to perform with us. We warmly welcome Katie Stillman for this concert.

Katie Stillman has a vibrant career as a chamber musician, soloist and orchestral leader. She recently joined the Villiers Quartet, a quartet which has developed a reputation as exceptional interpreters of British composers. She was a founding member of the Barbirolli Quartet which performed extensively throughout Europe. With her duo partner, pianist Simon Lane, she won many prizes and performed at the Wigmore Hall, the Purcell Room, Bridgewater Hall and St. John’s Smith Square. She teaches violin and chamber music at Chetham’s and can be heard on the 2011, 2014 and 2018 ABRSM violin syllabus for the supporting exam material which is distributed worldwide. Katie lives in the Peak District with her husband Owen and two small children. She loves walking in the hills and escaping back to Northern Ontario to spend time by the lake.

Katherine New is Section Leader Second Violin in the Orchestra of Opera North. Aside from orchestral life, Katherine is passionate about chamber music performing with eminent musicians such as cellist, Sally Pendlebury (Fitzwilliam Quartet, Angell Piano Trio). Katherine enjoys Radio 2, walking her two dogs and being Mum to three gorgeous children.

David Aspin is Section Leader Viola of the Orchestra of Opera North. He is regularly invited as a guest leader and chamber musician at festivals such as the BBC Proms and Three Choirs Festival and has recorded the Telemann Viola Concerto with Lancashire Sinfonetta. He can often be heard on BBC Radio 3. David is a passionate educator. He is a regular sectional coach with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and Chetham’s School of Music and has held the position of tutor of viola at the Royal Northern College of Music. David is often found wandering the Pennine hills as a dog-walker for the Cinnamon Trust or simply being a downward-facing dog enjoying yoga!

Jessica Burroughs is Section Leader Cellist of the Orchestra of Opera North. She performs regularly at the UK’s major concert venues and has toured the world extensively. She has played for big-screen motion pictures, worked with legendary pop, rock and soul stars, performed as a soloist at the Royal Albert Hall, London and been broadcast on many BBC Proms as well as for BBC Radio 3, Classic FM and CD recordings. Jessica is passionate about finding ways to make music more accessible. She is on the Board of Trustees for Hebden Bridge Arts and holds the position of Events Programmer for the charity Awards for Young Musicians. Jessica is at her happiest when she is stomping up a hill curious to see what is around the next corner, and spending time with her two-year-old daughter and steam train fanatic partner!
