Manchester Collective: Shades of Light

Igor Stravinsky Three Pieces for String Quartet
Edmund Finnis Sister
György Ligeti Sonata for Solo Cello
Philip Glass String Quartet No 2 (Company)
Edmund Finnis String Quartet No 2

Manchester Collective create intimate and intense experiences, drawing unexpected connections between cutting edge contemporary music and classical masterpieces.

In this “richly diverse programme” for string quartet (★★★★ The Guardian), the Collective join forces with composer Edmund Finnis to present an artist’s musical portrait, of sorts.

There’s something incredibly compelling about Ed’s work. His music is weightless and gleaming, suspended in time. His style is totally unique. The show finishes with Ed’s second string quartet, a piece full of gentle movement – but our journey to it is a winding one.

On the way, we’ll wander through the central European heartland of Ligeti’s Sonata for Solo Cello, witness Stravinsky’s manic and folky Three Pieces for String Quartet, and bask in the hypnotic patterns and pulses of Company by Philip Glass.
