The Whitworth Septet are a brass septet formed of penultimate and final year undergraduates at the Royal Northern College of Music. With its members playing together as early as December 2017, the group hail from a range of pre-college musical backgrounds, including the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain, the National Youth Brass Band of Great Britain, Chetham’s School of Music and various Junior Conservatoire departments. Inspired by the successful group Septura, The Whitworth Septet are striving to bolster the brass septet’s standing as a stalwart brass formation within the chamber music industry. Many of the group are keen arrangers, resulting in an assortment of bespoke programmes created specifically for The Whitworth Septet. Similarly, the group endeavour to commission new works and have had prominent composers within the RNCM reach out to us.

2020 was a strange year for all musicians, with the impact on ensembles severe due to distancing measures. However, The Whitworth Septet seized the initiative and produced several multi-track recordings of its own arrangements during the first UK lockdown, which the ensemble was able to enter into the RNCM Philip Jones Brass Ensemble Prize to high acclaim. Upon returning to life at the RNCM in October after restrictions eased, the group took centre stage in one of the first live concerts at the college in months (part of the RNCM ‘Thursday Lates’ series) and were grateful to be able to play to a live audience again as well as broadcasting live to a wider audience online. The septet have this year become a prominent force on the RNCM Chamber Music scene, receiving regular coaching from John Miller, Tim Barber, Murray Greig and Rob Buckland. Just at home in the studio as in the concert hall, the group produced a series of high-quality performance videos in December ready to release at the end of 2021. The septet has a busy year lined up and are eager to take all the opportunities that arise as we come out of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Whitworth Septet appears by kind permission of the RNCM.
