LEEDS INTERNATIONAL PIANO SERIES 2024/25

Elisabeth Leonskaja

Franz Schubert Piano Sonata, D 850
Arnold Schoenberg Suite for Piano
Arnold Schoenberg Six Little Piano Pieces
Franz Schubert Piano Sonata, D 960

A legend in her own time, Russian/Austrian pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja stems from the Russian school that produced Emil Gilels and Sviatoslav Richter, with whom she formed a musical partnership. We’re honoured to welcome her to Leeds as she brings a programme of music by Arnold Schoenberg and Franz Schubert, including the latter’s sublime final Piano Sonata in B flat. A unique event.

About the series

Leeds International Piano Series has firmly established itself as a collection of unmissable events on Leeds’ cultural scene.

The 2024/25 season brings together five of the world’s most distinguished pianists and a newcomer whose name, at the time of writing, is still unknown. This is the winner of the 2024 Leeds International Piano Competition, to be discovered in September 2024, playing what will be their first concert in Leeds following their winning performance.

There are more connections with The Leeds’ alumnae – the wonderful French pianist Anne Queffélec presents Ludwig van Beethoven’s last three piano sonatas, and the
much-loved British pianist Kathryn Stott gives her final Leeds performance as a concert pianist with a programme titled Musical Postcards.

Opening the series is one of the greatest pianists alive today, the legendary Elisabeth Leonskaja, with an enticing programme of Franz Schubert and Arnold Schoenberg. We’re particularly delighted to welcome two of the UK’s leading pianists back to Leeds – Sir Stephen Hough, playing music by Cécile Chaminade alongside the great Franz Liszt and Frédéric Chopin, and Benjamin Grosvenor, still in his early thirties but already a major world star, with a wonderfully romantic programme of Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann, and Modest Mussorgsky.

We look forward to welcoming you to Leeds Conservatoire, the home of the Leeds International Piano Series.
