Margaret McDonald makes a fourth appearance by popular demand in our concert series, bringing with her music from the land across the pond with Simon offering celebrated transcriptions of Barber’s Adagio for strings and Sousa’s immortal march, Stars and Stripes for ever. There are popular melodies from Aaron Copland’s magically arranged, and greatly loved, Old American Songs as well as a generous helping of numbers from the pen of that supreme lyricist and composer, Cole Porter. At the heart of the programme is the fabulous setting by Samuel Barber of Matthew Arnold’s evocative poem Dover Beach.
