Whitlock Fantasie Choral No 1
Duruflé Prélude sur l’introit de l’Épiphanie Op 13
Vierne Symphonie III

It is a special treat to have a complete account of Louis Vierne’s Symphonie III as the main work in today’s concert. The music unfolds with Whitlock’s soaring Fantasie Choral No 1 and has at its heart Maurice Duruflé’s atmospheric prelude founded on the plainchant introit for the Feast of the Epiphany on 6 January. Inscribed to the composer’s friend Marcel Dupré [even though the two men later became tragically estranged each from the other] Louis Vierne’s remarkably powerful third organ symphony dates from 1911 and its strongly projected, energised endeavour makes it one of the organ repertoire’s most impact-ful pieces; spectacular contrasts abound in and among the piece’s vivid five movements. Some commentators have pointed out that the opening movement shows how loudly the organ can be played and the second just how quietly!
