Music of reflection and triumph underpins our first programme of the New Year with the thoughtful progress of Robert Cockroft’s Soliloquy vividly contrasting with Derek Bourgeois’ foot-tapping Serenade written as the wedding recessional for his own nuptials. Franz Xaver Schnizer [1740-1785] is represented by his popular Sonata in C, Bach by a famous chorale-based work on the metrical Lutheran Gloria in excelsis [Allein Gott in der Höh sei Her] and Mendelssohn by the first, and finest, of his Three Preludes and Fugues Op 87. The music of former Walsall Borough Organist, Bristolian Harold Britton, brings the concert to a close with his brilliant variations on Gershwin’s I got rhythm from the musical Girl Crazy.
