Mendelssohn - Elijah Listen

Free pre-concert talk at 6.15pm by Judy Blezzard.

Mendelssohn’s oratorio Elijah tells the story of the Prophet Elijah in the perilous Old Testament, chosen by God to straighten things out in the troubled kingdom of Israel. It premiered at Birmingham Town Hall in 1846 and was an instant hit with the two thousand-strong audience.

Against all the odds Elijah manages, but not before performing a few miracles along the way including resurrection of a child, summoning the rain, being fed by angels, dividing the River Jordan, and lastly, ascending to heaven on a chariot of fire.

  • Though everything else may appear shallow and repulsive, even the smallest task in music is so absorbing, and carries us so far away from town, country, earth, and all worldly things, that it is truly a blessed gift of God
