Britten - War Requiem Listen
Free pre-concert talk at 6.45pm by Steve Muir.
Britten’s choral masterpiece delicately weaves the Latin Mass with nine of Wilfred Owen’s war poems through the voices of three soloists, two orchestras and choirs of adults and children. Britten brutally bares the reality of one human obeying an order to kill another through heartwrenching harmony, melody and orchestration.
Britten had a strong message: “My subject is War, and the Pity of War. The Poetry is in the pity... all a poet can do today is warn”, is the Owen inscription on the title page. In a concert marking the 100th anniversary of the end of The Great War, we also remember the members of Leeds Festival Chorus and ancestors of the choruses performing this evening who served during the conflict.
The concert will be finished by approximately 9pm. Please note there is no interval in this concert.
This concert is part of The City Remembers programme.
