Elias Quartet performs at The Venue

Described as one of the leading ensembles of its generation, Elias Quartet performs at The Venue, Leeds College of Music on Tuesday 19 February 2019 as part of Schubert and Friends: Leeds International Chamber Season 2018/19.

Elias Quartet is joined by virtuosic musicians Chi-Chi Nwanoku (double bass) and Sam Haywood (piano) in a performance of Schubert’s sublime String Quintet (The Trout). The Quintet was composed in 1819 shortly after Schubert had spent an idyllic summer holiday at Steyr in Austria and it is regarded as one of the greatest compositions in all chamber music. The Elias Quartet will also perform Schubert’s stunning String Quartet No 13 (Rosamunde) premiered by the Schuppanzigh Quartet in 1824, and more recently was used on the soundtrack to the 2012 film The Avengers.

Elias String Quartet takes its name from Mendelssohn’s oratorio, Elijah, of which Elias is its German form, and have quickly established themselves as one of the most intense and vibrant quartets of its generation. The quartet was formed in 1998 at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester where it worked closely with the late Dr Christopher Rowland. Elias Quartet was chosen to participate in BBC Radio 3’s New Generation Artists’ scheme and was also a recipient of a 2010 Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award. It has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious chamber venues, including New York’s Carnegie Hall, the Washington Library of Congress, the Vienna Musikverein, the Berlin Konzerthaus, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the Wigmore Hall in London.

Curated by pianist Sam Haywood, Leeds International Chamber Season 2018/19 focuses on the music of Schubert and his contemporaries. The final concert of the season concludes with the leader of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, violinist Rainer Honeck and pianist Sam Haywood performing Schubert’s epic Fantasy In C major (19 Mar).

Sam Haywood Artistic Director of Leeds International Chamber Season 2018/19, said:
“What an incredible team will be joining me for this concert! Watch out, the Elias Quartet can reduce you to tears if you’re not careful, as I can testify from their stunning performances at our Solent Music Festival. The double bass player and broadcaster Chi-Chi Nwanoku needs no introduction. The first time I heard Chi-Chi was at the Royal Festival Hall with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment. It was as if she was the engine of the orchestra – such incredible rhythm and energy. She now has her own ensemble: Chineke Orchestra.”

Tickets for Elias Quartet and the other concerts as part of Schubert and Friends: Leeds International Chamber Season 2018/19 are priced at £21 and £19 (concessions available) and can be purchased from the City Centre Box Office on 0113 376 0318 or book online
