BBC Philharmonic opens the Orchestral Season

Known for its innovative and versatile music-making, BBC Philharmonic opens the Leeds International Orchestral Season 2018/19 at Leeds Town Hall on Saturday 29 September.

Under the baton of maestro Omer Meir Wellber, the BBC Philharmonic performs Sibelius’ virtuosic Violin Concerto starring one of the most talented violinists of his generation, Sergei Krylov. The orchestra also performs Brahms’ passionate Symphony No 1 which took him 21 years to write and Wager’s stunning Prelude to Act I: Lohengrin.

Tonight’s soloist, Sergei Krylov was born in Moscow into a family of musicians. He began studying the violin at the age of five and completed his studies at the Moscow Central Music School. While still very young he won the International Lipizer Violin Competition, the Stradivarius International Violin Competition and the Fritz Kreisler Competition. He is regularly invited to perform at prestigious concert halls worldwide and has appeared with orchestras including the Staatskapelle Dresden, Philharmonique de Radio France, London Philharmonic and the Royal Philharmonic.

Tonight’s conductor, Omer Meir Wellber has established himself as one of today’s leading conductors of operatic and orchestral repertoire alike. He has directed some of the world’s most prestigious ensembles including the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lyon, RAI Torino and Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. In demand around the world, he balances constant international appearances with a commitment to performing classical music and promoting music integration projects in his native country Israel. Omar has recently began his tenure as Principal Conductor at the Semperoper Dresden.

The BBC Philharmonic performs over 100 concerts a year for broadcast on BBC Radio 3. With an adventurous approach to programming, the orchestra’s passion for bringing classical music to new audiences has seen collaborations with Clean Bandit, The 1975, Rag'n'Bone Man and Elbow. The BBC Philharmonic is based at MediaCityUK in Salford and performs an annual season of concerts at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall, as well as giving regular concerts in Hanley, Kendal and other venues across the north of England.

Tickets for the BBC Philharmonic are priced £14.31-£38.16 and are available from the Box Office on 0113 376 0318 or book online.
