Russians return to Leeds Town Hall posted 12 Oct 2018

Russians return to Leeds Town Hall

The first internationally touring orchestra to feature in Leeds International Orchestral Season 2018/19 is the Russian State Symphony Orchestra on Saturday 13 October.

The eighty-two year old ensemble tours with an all-Russian programme led by conductor Valentin Uryupin, and treats you to an all-Russian extravaganza, featuring a Masquerade by Khachaturian, Rachmaninov’s expansive Symphony No 2 and Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No 2, famously showcased in Walt Disney’s Fantasia 2000, but for us performed by dazzling pianist Barry Douglas.

Valentin Uryupin enjoys a career as clarinettist and conductor, performing and giving masterclasses all over the world as well as directing from the podium. Winner of the 2015 Russian Conducting Competition, Valentin is now permanent conductor at the Perm Opera in Moscow with the Music Aeterna Orchestra, one of Russia’s most in demand orchestras in the field of period performance.

Piano soloist Barry Douglas grew up in Belfast, where he studied clarinet, cello and organ alongside the piano. He went on to win several competitions, including being awarded the Gold Medal at the 1986 International Tchaikovsky Competition, being the first non-Russian to do so since 1958. Barry continues to travel the world performing, as well as directing Camerata Ireland, a chamber orchestra he founded in 1998.

Tickets for the BBC Philharmonic are priced £14.31-£38.16 and are available from the Box Office on 0113 376 0318 or book online. Don’t forget that 50% discounts are available for students, under 18s and jobseekers. Plus, if you’re under 26 you can purchase tickets for an orchestral concert for just £5 in the seven days before the concert.
