Reg Vardy Band stars in Leeds Best of Brass

Leeds Best of Brass continues at Morley Town Hall on Saturday 8 December with a performance from one of history’s most successful brass ensembles, the Reg Vardy Band.

Under the baton of maestro John Roberts the band treats us to a mixed programme of arrangements including Billy Joel’s doo-wop classic The Longest Time, music from sci-fi big screen hit Back to the Future and some festive favourites for all to enjoy.

John Roberts began his musical career at the age of 10-years-old playing cornet with Rothwell Temperance Band, eventually being appointed Deputy Conductor when he was only 21 years old. He progressed as conductor of a number of bands reaching the final of the Young Conductor of the Year competition in 1984. Having conducted many of the country's top bands, such as Black Dyke, in concert, John was appointed Professional Conductor of the British Steel Teesside Band in 1993 and again he enjoyed contest success, twice winning the Isle of Man entertainment championships and qualifying for the National Finals in the Royal Albert Hall.  He is currently professional conductor with Lockwood Brass, based in Lingdale, Cleveland, with whom he has qualified for the National Finals on 4 successive occasions, and in September 2013 John was appointed Resident Conductor with the North East's most successful band; Reg Vardy and won the Dr Martin Contest in Middlesbrough in 2014.

The Reg Vardy Band has become one of the most successful brass bands in history having won the Northern Regional Championships more times than any other brass band in the country and are the only North East band to have competed in every major UK competition as well as the World Championships in Kerkrade, and they consistently feature in the World Brass Band Rankings top 20. The band’s reputation as the premier brass band in the North of England saw partnerships formed in 2014 with Geneva Instruments and more recently with Wallace Mutes and Hercules music stands. Band members assist Geneva Instruments in the development and trialling of new instruments and are privileged to play the very latest in the continuously developing range of Geneva instruments. Away from competitions the Reg Vardy Band are renowned for giving high quality concerts which include innovative new original music alongside the more traditional brass band repertoire.

Acclaimed as the finest series of brass band concerts in the world, the Leeds Best of Brass series 2018/19 consists of eight concerts all taking place at Morley Town Hall. The series features the World Famous Black Dyke Band (9 Feb 19), Yorkshire’s own Hammonds Saltaire Band (19 Jan 19) and the best and most consistent ‘public subscription band’ in the world Brighouse & Rastrick Band (6 April 19).
